Game types and levels

The games give you a chance to practise or revise what you have learned in the memos. They aim to test the skills or knowledge you have acquired in the following fields: culture, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary and phonetics.

The games are presented according to 4 levels of difficulty:
  • beginner's level is the easiest. This is for people who are unfamiliar with French;
  • basic level is for people with some knowledge of French;
  • medium level is for people who can express themselves in most everyday situations;
  • advanced level is for people who already have an excellent grasp of French.
You can do the Level test first to identify which workshops match your level of French.

There are 6 types of game available

Dialogue

Principle: Chat with a virtual correspondent!
Step-by-step: Take your time reading the description (1) to situate the context of the conversation. To progress in the conversation, you have to answer your correspondent's questions (answer mode) or ask him/her questions (question mode). Read and listen to the character's question (2) by clicking on the arrow (3) and answer him/her by selecting the right answer from among the options you are given (4). In question mode, read and listen to the instruction (7) and select the right question (8). To clearly hear your correspondent's questions or answers, don't forget to adjust the sound (5). You can take all the time you need.
Progression in the game: If you pick the right answer, you move on to the next scene (6). If you don't, you stay where you are for another go at selecting the right answer. Beware though, if you get two wrong in the same scene, the game ends.
Skills tested: cultural knowledge, comprehension, grammar and vocabulary

Quiz

Principle
: Test your culture knowledge and skills in comprehension, vocabulary, grammar or phonetics.
Step-by-step: Read the clue at the top of the screen (1). Read the options that appear (2) and click on the right answer before it disappears. Once you have clicked on the correct word or expression, you win a point and move on to the next clue. If you click on a wrong option, you lose a point and move on to the next clue. Beware, your time is limited (3)!

Progression in the game: The game has 9 questions and the options appear more and more quickly. Beware, if you get 3 wrong answers in a row, the game ends!
Tip: You can pause the game at any time by clicking on the pause button (4).
Skills tested: cultural knowledge, comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and phonetics

Catch-the-word

Principle: You have to catch as many words as possible corresponding to the instruction and steer well clear of the others.
Step-by-step: Read the instruction (1). It will start raining words (2). Move the hoover about (3) to catch the words corresponding to the instruction and let the odd ones out fall on the ground. The list of words available can be seen in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen (4): the words that you have correctly identified as the right answer (by hoovering them up) or as odd ones out (by letting them fall to the ground) appear in green, and the words that you have wrongly identified appear in red. The series ends when all the words have fallen once.

Progression in the game: The game has 3 levels. When you have collected enough correct words, you move on to the next level. If you make too many mistakes (over 50%), you won't be able to move on to the next level. However, you can play a level again to improve your score and move on to the next level.
Tip: Avoid the comets (5) as they will destroy your hoover and put an end to your round!
Skills tested: culture, vocabulary, grammar

Shoot-the-word

Principle
: Among a series of words parading across your screen, destroy the ones that don't correspond to the instruction.
Step-by-step: Read the instruction (1) to find out which words you mustn't shoot. The words (2) are targets that parade from left to right. Destroy the words that don't correspond to the instruction: click on the letters of the odd word out until it appears in green (3). If you destroy a word that you should have left (since it corresponds to the instruction), this will appear in red. Beware, your time is limited (4)!

Progression in the game: The game has 3 levels. When you have destroyed all of the incorrect words in a series, you'll move on to the next level.
Tip: You can win a bonus by creating a new word. One word will appear in yellow (5) in one of the 3 levels: destroy part of this word to create a new one "for keeps" - i.e. which matches the instruction (in the example below, we have destroyed the letters "man" to keep the word "bar").
Skills tested: culture, vocabulary, grammar

Position-the-word

Principle: Guide the word-balloons to the right category bins by using the whirlwinds. You have to sort the words making as few mistakes as possible.
Step-by-step: The game screen has category bins at the top (1) each containing a sorting instruction (2). Words or phrases attached to balloons (3) rise up in the sky. Read the sorting instructions and guide the word-balloons to the right category bins using the whirlwinds (4): click several times towards the right category bin to form whirlwinds that will pull the balloon in the right direction. When the word-balloon has flown into the right category bin, it turns green. If it doesn't, it will turn red. The list of words or expressions available are shown in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen (5): the words or expressions you have correctly positioned appear in green, while the ones you have wrongly positioned appear in red.
Progression in the game: The game is organised into three levels of difficulty. You won't be able to move up to the next level if you score less than 50%.
Tip: Beware of the pin (6) which will pop the balloons!
Skills tested: culture, vocabulary, grammar

Criss-cross

Principle
: Move the letters into the grid to form the words illustrated by the pictures within the allotted time.
Step-by-step: Move your mouse over the pictures (1) to listen to the word. Move the letters on the right (2) into the grid to form the letters corresponding to the pictures. Beware, your time is limited (3)!
Tip: This game is only available for beginners.
